Texas vs. Tennessee Pick: Back the Longhorns’ Defense

Neyland Stadium will make Texas earn this one. Tennessee has a productive running game, an unbeaten record and a home crowd ready for the nation’s top-ranked team. But the matchup we like most belongs to the Longhorns: their defensive front against an offense that wants to establish the run and keep its freshman quarterback out of difficult passing situations.

Our play is Texas -4.5, a three-star selection with 1 unit at risk.

Make Tennessee Win Through the Air

Texas held Ohio State to 94 rushing yards and followed that by limiting UTSA to 72. Against UTSA, the Longhorns allowed just 142 total yards in a 30–6 victory. That ability to take away the ground game is central to our pick.

Tennessee has averaged nearly 299 rushing yards through three games, but Texas represents a significant step up from Furman, Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State. The Longhorns do not need to shut the run down completely. They need enough early-down stops to create third-and-long and put more of the game on Faizon Brandon’s arm.

The Quarterback Test

Brandon has opened his college career with six passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He deserves credit for that start. This matchup asks a different question: can the freshman keep the offense moving if Tennessee cannot consistently stay ahead of the chains?

Arch Manning has already navigated a demanding game against Ohio State, helping Texas erase a 23–3 fourth-quarter deficit. That does not make him immune to road mistakes, but we favor his experience when the game becomes a series of difficult third downs and late possessions.

Texas Can Win Without a Shootout

The Longhorns ran for 228 yards against UTSA. A balanced approach would help them manage Tennessee’s pressure and avoid asking Manning to carry every drive. Our preferred script is Texas winning enough early downs on both sides of the ball to gradually take control, rather than relying on a string of explosive passing plays.

The number matters. At -4.5, a five-point Texas victory covers. That is a meaningful difference from laying -5.5, and it gives us room for a competitive game deep into the fourth quarter.

The Biggest Risk

This is Texas’ first road game, and Tennessee’s defensive pressure and home-field advantage are real concerns. The Longhorns’ offense was uneven against Ohio State and UTSA; sacks, turnovers or stalled drives could keep the Volunteers within one possession all afternoon. If Tennessee runs effectively enough to protect Brandon, our defensive advantage becomes much less decisive.

Betting Picture

The latest reported consensus snapshot showed Texas drawing 59% of spread bets but 49% of spread money, with Tennessee taking 41% of bets and 51% of money. Those figures describe one reported sample, not the entire market, and the source did not provide an exact update time. The split is a reminder that Tennessee has support—not a reason by itself to back or fade either team.

FSP Verdict

We are backing Texas to make Tennessee work harder for its rushing yards and to finish the stronger team in a competitive SEC game. The road setting keeps this a measured three-star position.
