Friday College Football Contrarian Value Scores — September 4, 2026

September 4, 2026

Friday night’s college football slate gives FSP its first full Contrarian Value Score board on the new 0–100 scale.

The Contrarian Value Score (CV) estimates whether one-sided betting sentiment may have helped create a better price on the less-popular side. It is not a measure of how unpopular a wager is by itself. A wager only earns a strong CV score when sentiment pressure and market movement appear to have improved the price and independent value still provides support.

100 = strong evidence that crowding created a better price. 0 = little evidence that opposing the crowd creates value.

Friday Night College Football Contrarian Value Board

Rank Wager CV Score
1 UTEP at Oklahoma Under 51.5 72
2 Stanford +24.5 vs. Miami 58
3 Indiana State +36.5 at Purdue 55
4 Toledo +9.5 at Michigan State 52
5 Fresno State +21.5 at USC 34

1. UTEP–Oklahoma Under 51.5 — CV 72

This is the clearest contrarian-price setup on the Friday board. FSP’s deep handicap found only 19% of tickets on the Under while money was nearly balanced at 49%. The market moved from roughly Under 50.5 (-114) to Under 51.5 (+100) at Caesars, while independent fair-total references continued to cluster around the low 50s. That is the type of setup CV is built to identify: public pressure appears to have improved both the number and the price without fully eliminating the independent-value case.

2. Stanford +24.5 — CV 58

Miami owns the dominant national narrative and available spread snapshots showed roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of tickets and an even larger share of money on the Hurricanes. The line climbed from around Miami -21.5 to -24.5. That creates a legitimate contrarian question on Stanford, but the evidence is mixed because some independent betting analysis still makes Miami fair beyond the current number. The crowd may have improved Stanford’s price, but the case is not strong enough for a high CV reading.

3. Indiana State +36.5 — CV 55

Purdue carries the comfortable FBS-versus-FCS narrative and the overwhelming expectation of a blowout. The massive spread creates some natural resistance, and visible handicapping support exists for Indiana State plus the points. FSP sees some potential crowd premium in the favorite, but not enough independent evidence to classify the underdog as a strong contrarian-value position.

4. Toledo +9.5 — CV 52

Michigan State receives the stronger brand, home-field and Big Ten narrative, but Toledo is respected enough that this is not a heavily one-sided information environment. The number offers some potential underdog value if the market is overpricing Michigan State’s name and home field, but the crowding signal is only moderate.

5. Fresno State +21.5 — CV 34

USC dominates national attention, but Fresno State is not truly abandoned by the market. FSP’s fresh web-narrative work found betting-media and community support on both sides, and the spread has moved toward Fresno from higher numbers rather than becoming increasingly inflated against the Bulldogs. That means Fresno may still be a good or bad wager on football merits, but it does not currently qualify as a strong contrarian-price setup.

What Stands Out?

The board is important because it shows why low sentiment and contrarian value are not the same thing. Stanford can be unpopular and still receive only a moderate CV score if independent pricing does not clearly show that Miami money pushed the spread too far. UTEP–Oklahoma Under is different: the crowd appears to have improved the price while the independent handicap still supports the less-popular side.

Contrarian Value is not “fade the public.” It asks whether the public may have helped create a better price.

These are board-level intelligence scores, not official FSP picks. Scores can move as market prices, betting splits, injuries and independent fair-value information change closer to kickoff.
