Why We Like Clemson–Cal Over 50

Cal’s willingness to throw and Clemson’s opportunity to build on its running game give both offenses a route to points Friday night. The Bears can attack through the air, while the Tigers face a defense that has been much more vulnerable on the ground. We’re backing those contrasting strengths to produce enough sustained drives and explosive plays to get over 50.

Clemson Has a Matchup to Build Around

Cal has allowed 5.3 yards per rush and seven rushing touchdowns through three games. That is the opening for a Clemson offense that found better balance against North Carolina. Gideon Davidson ran for 105 yards on 16 carries, while freshman Tait Reynolds completed 20 of 29 passes for 215 yards in his first start.

If Davidson can keep Clemson ahead of the chains, Reynolds does not have to carry the offense through obvious passing situations. Productive early-down runs would give the Tigers more manageable third downs and opportunities to use play-action. We see that as their clearest path to contributing multiple touchdowns.

Cal Can Supply the Passing Offense

The Bears have attempted 124 passes in three games—more than 41 per game—and average 321.7 passing yards. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele’s latest outing produced 413 yards and three touchdown passes, including an 80-yard connection with Kyion Grayes.

That performance came against Wagner, so repeating those numbers against Clemson is a much tougher assignment. What appeals to us is Cal’s willingness to keep attacking through the air. That volume creates opportunities for chunk gains and gives the Bears a way to answer scores without needing long, run-heavy possessions.

The Improvement Clemson Still Needs

The Tigers’ 28 points against North Carolina were encouraging, but the offense remained uneven. An 18-play, 88-yard possession ended in a field goal, and Clemson also settled for three after taking over at the UNC 12. Those are exactly the missed opportunities that threaten an over.

There were better signs later: Clemson produced a 92-yard touchdown drive and then covered 68 yards in four plays for the go-ahead score. Our wager backs that progress to continue against Cal’s vulnerable run defense. It requires better finishing, not simply accumulating yards between the 20s.

Why Three Stars

Cal’s pass defense deserves respect: opponents have completed only 51.4% of their attempts, and the Bears have five interceptions. Reynolds is still inexperienced, and Clemson faces a short week, cross-country travel and a 10:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff. Those factors could disrupt the offensive rhythm we need.

We like the routes to scoring on both sides, but neither offense has established enough consistency for a larger position. Our release of Over 50 (-110) also improves on the 50.5 available at the other three priority books when checked, preserving a push if the game lands on 50.
